چکیده

We study the galaxy morphology-luminosity-environmental relation and its redshift evolution using a spectroscopic sample of galaxies in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS). In the redshift range of 0.4 ≤ z ≤ 1.0 we detect conformity in morphology between neighboring galaxies. The realm of conformity is confined within the virialized region associated with each galaxy plus dark matter halo system. When a galaxy is located within the virial radius of its nearest neighbor galaxy, its morphology strongly depends on the neighbor’s distance and morphology: the probability for a galaxy to be an early type (fE) strongly increases as it approaches an early-type neighbor, but tends to decrease as it approaches a late-type neighbor. We find that fE evolves much faster in high density regions than in low density regions, and that the morphology-density relation becomes significantly weaker at z ≈ 1. This may be because the rate of galaxy-galaxy interactions is higher in high density regions, and a series of interactions and mergers over the course of galaxy life eventually transform late types into early types. We find more isolated galaxies are more luminous, which supports luminosity transformation through mergers at these redshifts. Our results are consistent with those from nearby galaxies, and demonstrate that galaxy-galaxy interactions have been strongly affecting the galaxy evolution over a long period of time. The Environments of Low and High Luminosity Radio Galaxies at Moderate Redshifts

In the local Universe, high-power radio galaxies live in lower density environments than lowluminosity radio galaxies. If this trend continues to higher redshifts, powerful radio galaxies would serve as efficient probes of moderate redshift groups and poor clusters. Photometric studies of radio galaxies at 0.3 . z . 0.5 suggest that the radio luminosity-environment correlation disappears at mod...

Optical Morphology Evolution of Infrared Luminous Galaxies in Goods-n

We combine optical morphologies and photometry from HST, redshifts from Keck, and mid-infrared luminosities from Spitzer for an optically selected sample of ∼ 800 galaxies in GOODS-N to track morphology evolution of infrared luminous galaxies (LIRGs) since redshift z = 1. We find a 50% decline in the number of LIRGs from z ∼ 1 to lower redshift, in agreement with previous studies. In addition, ...

Evolution of Galaxy Luminosity Function and Luminosity Function by Density

Using galaxy sample observed by the BATC large-field multi-color sky survey and galaxy data of SDSS in the overlapped fields, we study the dependence of the restframe r-band galaxy luminosity function on redshift and on large-scale environment. The large-scale environment is defined by isodensity contour with density contrast δρ/ρ. The data set is a composite sample of 69,671 galaxies with reds...

The Ultraviolet Luminosity Density of the Universe from Photometric Redshifts of Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field

Studies of the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) and other deep surveys have revealed an apparent peak in the ultraviolet (UV) luminosity density, and therefore the star-formation rate density, of the Universe at redshifts 1 < z < 2. We use photometric redshifts of galaxies in the HDF to determine the comoving UV luminosity density and find that, when errors (in particular, sampling error) are properly a...

The Bi-variate Luminosity-color Distribution of Iras Galaxies, and Implications for the High Redshift Universe

We present a characterization of the local luminosity-color, bi-variate distribution of IRAS galaxies from the 1.2 Jy sample, selected at 60μm. The R(60,100) infrared color is used as the best single parameter description of the IR spectral energy distribution of galaxies. We derive an analytical form of the distribution and use it to constrain the effect of the IR color distribution on evoluti...
